Bulawayo Man Arrested for Theft of Copper Cables, Valued at US$770
Bulawayo Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube has issued a stern warning to those involved in the vandalism of ZEDTC (Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company) cables and individuals engaging in illegal copper trading.
This is after the arrest of Jonathan Mapfumo, a 51-year-old man of Emakhandeni, on charges of theft of copper cables. The arrest was made following a police raid at the accused’s residence and the subsequent recovery of stolen copper cables with an estimated value of US$770.
“Those people who vandalise ZEDTC cables, those who think of doing so, and those who are buyers should seriously consider trying other legal business avenues as the long arm of the law is now hovering over their heads,” warned Inspector Ncube Abednico.
Combating Criminal Activity
Inspector Ncube added that law enforcement agencies are actively combating such criminal activities and urged potential offenders to consider legal business avenues instead.
According to Inspector Ncube, the detectives from the CID Homicide division received information on March 20, 2024, regarding the accused’s involvement in the illicit copper trade without a proper licence. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, the detectives conducted a raid at the accused’s residence the following day, but he was not present at the time.
However, a short while later, Jonathan Mapfumo arrived at his residence driving a silver Toyota Regius. The detectives conducted a thorough search of the house, but no illegal items were found. They then proceeded to search the vehicle and discovered a black crane scale hidden under the driver’s seat. Additionally, a white sack containing various copper cables was found under the back seat.
Valued at US$770
The recovered copper cables, weighing approximately 38.5 kilograms, were valued at US$770. The accused failed to provide any licence or permit authorising his possession or dealing of copper, leading to his subsequent arrest.
During the interview, Mapfumo claimed to have acquired the copper cables from unidentified individuals and revealed that they were intended for transport to South Africa.
The police spokesperson also expressed appreciation for the collaboration and assistance provided by the community, highlighting the importance of community engagement in combating criminal activities.
“Police would also like to appreciate the community for working hand in glove with them,” he stated.
